VDES R‐Mode performance analysis and experimental results

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become an essential part of maritime navigation, in particular to improve situational awareness and vessel traffic management. The dependence on GNSS creates vulnerability for shipping. Driven by this vulnerability, the desire a backup system navigation has been emerging. VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) standard provides communication capabilities applications. VDES is currently being revised. As revision, will be extended ranging functionalities, called R-Mode, as alternative navigation. In paper, we address design aspects evaluate positioning performance R-Mode. We derive estimation theory bounds accuracy R-Mode distance velocity. case study, discuss benefit satellite links complement positioning. Furthermore, introduce Kalman filter position velocity tracking, which apply experimental data. describe experiment conducted at Lake Ammer, southwest Munich, setup. Our results show that capable achieving 95th-percentile horizontal error 22 m. Thus, promising approach can meet IALA requirements.
